Date: 15 December 2024 (Sunday)
Partner Organisation: Caritas Development Project for Grassroots Organizations
Speakers: Caritas social workers, and Kin Shin Lane residents Mr. Chung and Mr. Wong Cho-fu
Participants: 16
Led by social workers from Caritas Hong Kong, participants were invited to step into Kim Shin Lane, one of the last remaining laneway communities in the Sham Shui Po District*.
Within its enclosed layout, the neighbourhood has nurtured close-knit relationships among residents. Many have taken the initiative to beautify shared spaces and even created small rooftop gardens. As redevelopment draws near, both the people and the plants that inhabit this place have stories to tell.
In this session, staff from Caritas Development Project for Grassroots Organizations, who have long worked in the Kim Shin Lane community, shared the history of this unique neighbourhood and the stories of its residents as they face relocation. Two residents also opened their homes and rooftops, guiding participants through their everyday surroundings and sharing heartfelt reflections on the past and present of their planting spaces.
*“Sham Shui Po District” in this context includes Sham Shui Po, Cheung Sha Wan, Lai Chi Kok, Shek Kip Mei, and Yau Yat Chuen.
**This project is organised by The Conservancy Association, implemented by the Society of Hong Kong History, and funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.
